NBC Connecticut: New Haven police to test artificial intelligence to help write police reports

The New Haven Police Department will launch a pilot program in February using AI software, Draft One by Axon, to assist officers in writing reports. The AI will transcribe audio from body cameras for low-level incidents like theft, while officers will review the reports for accuracy. The program, set to run for 3-6 months, aims to save time and increase efficiency.

Vahid Behzadan, Assistant Professor at the University of New Haven, cautioned that officers may become overly reliant on AI and miss small errors. The ACLU raised concerns about potential biases and transparency in AI-generated reports. The program will be evaluated for effectiveness after the pilot phase.
