Dr. Vahid Behzadan, the director of the SAIL lab, has been appointed to the newly formed Connecticut Artificial Intelligence Task Force. This appointment follows the recent enactment of CT Act 23-16 (1103) in May 2023, titled “AN ACT CONCERNING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, AUTOMATED DECISION-MAKING AND PERSONAL DATA PRIVACY.” The act mandates the creation of a task force to study artificial intelligence and to develop an artificial intelligence bill of rights, focusing on the ethical and equitable use of AI in state government and private industry.
The task force, a 21-member working group, is preparing to start work on recommendations for regulating the use of artificial intelligence by state agencies and private businesses in Connecticut. The formation of this task force is a significant step in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technology. Dr. Behzadan was appointed to this task force by the CT House Majority Leader Rep. Jason Rojas, to serve as an academic with technical expertise in AI safety and security.
The task force is charged with developing two sets of recommendations. The first set will offer guidance regarding best practices for the ethical and equitable use of AI in state government, and the second set is intended to lay the groundwork for the regulation of private businesses. Additionally, the task force is authorized to make recommendations on adopting other AI legislation and will contribute to drafting the “Connecticut AI Bill of Rights,” which will be based on the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s “Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights” issued in October 2022.
